The work relating to construction of a sub-way using the push-box technology for the Coimbatore Railway Junction is making headway with the work having reached the first and second platforms.
Once completed, the sub-way being constructed at a cost of Rs 5.5. crore will provide the third entry and exit point for Coimbatore Junction.
As such, the narrow sub-way connecting the Western and Eastern entry point to the platforms is congested and the railways decided to have the third entry in the form of a subway. The sub-way will have escalators and lifts for the benefit of aged, ailing and physically challenged persons.
The work has gained momentum with the subway having reached the first and second platforms.
Now officials are planning to commence the work on February 15 for constructing the other end of the subway for providing access to platforms 5 and 6.
This particular work would take anywhere between 25 to 30 days. After completing the same, works for constructing the connecting sub-way i.e., the one for platforms 3 and 4 with the subway for 1 and 2 and 5 and 6 would be carried out and that would take about 25 to 30 days.
Authorities would then commence the works in terms of installing the escalators and lifts for these platforms.
The ultimate aim is to have the sub-way inaugurated by May throwing the third entry open for tourists and to decongest the existing two entry/exit points.
Officials are also on the job of negotiating with a place of worship requesting them to provide some pathway along their premises which will also help in decongesting the main entrance.
