Coimbatore Police crack whip, fine collection up

The police stepped up enforcement of road rules and in the last ten months booked 2.64 lakh rule violators netting Rs. 4.91 crore as fine.

The drive focused on speeding of vehicles, rash and negligent driving, drunk driving, and use of cellular phone while driving.

Minors were found taking out without a valid license.

Between January and October this year, the police have registered 2.65 lakh cases, of which 30,323 were over speeding/rash and negligent driving, 7,640 were fined for use of cellular phones while on the wheels, 13,300 were caught for drunk driving, 13,000-odd were fined for driving without valid driving licence.

A total of 9,334 were fined for not wearing seat-belt while driving cars.

Even overseas students were found driving vehicles without a valid driving licence. About 1,026 foreign nationals are staying in the city on student visa.

Many of them do not have an international driving licence. If foreign nationals were caught for violation of traffic rules, action would be taken against those who provided them with vehicles too, said police officials.
