Police are embarking on pro-active measures to sensitisepublic on the steps to be taken to prevent crime especially burglary targeting houses whose members go on vacations in the coming months.

In Coimbatore Rural, police have begun distribution of handbills to houses in two police station limits namely Vadavalli and Thudialur, Superintendent of Police – Coimbatore Rural District M. Sudhakar told The Hindu on Thursday.

The handbill exhorts the residents to make sure that they do not leave valuables such as cash and jewellery in the house and go out of station. To avoid locking the houses, they could think of having a friend or a relative to stay in the house during their absence.

Public should be vigilant to look out for people moving around suspiciously on two-wheelers and in four-wheelers and in such an event, the registration number of the vehicle should be noted down. House owners should have security features such as CCTV cameras and burglar alarms installed.

Police have given the phone numbers of the police station, Inspector of Police, Sub-Inspectors in Law and Order/Crime, Head Constable and Station Writer in the handbill.

Handbills exhort the residents to inform the police station by entering the details of the house in the Locked Door Register being maintained in every police station. This will enable the police to frequently keep tabs on such houses by ensuring the motorcycle squad, patrol vehicle, constables marching night beats and lurking beats visit the house at frequent intervals.

Colonies with nearly 100 houses should try to hire one security staff and people should make it a habit not to park vehicles outside without any safety.

Mr.Sudhakar said that initially the exercise is being done in thickly populated areas such as Vadavalli, Thudialur where there is increasing demand for policing and also in some areas in Pollachi.

Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan said that residents in areas such Saravanampatti, Peelamedu, Singanallur, Podanur, Kuniamuthur and Kovaipudurwith could write to the jurisdiction police station intimating the address of the house , or could visit the city police website www.coimbator ecitypolice.com and call up the jurisdiction police station or send SMS to the jurisdiction officers.

Mr.Viswanathan said that once the information is entered into the locked door register, police personnel would be asked to frequently visit the respective area to maintain vigil.
