Coimbatore will soon get on track in its efforts to become a smart city, as Coimbatore Corporation plans to form a District Advisory Committee, hold meetings with stakeholders, identify key areas, draft a smart city plan and submit it to the Union government.

Coimbatore is one of the 12 cities in the State selected for the Smart City project.

The Corporation will soon fill-in and submit a standard document about the facilities and systems in place and the city is expected to easily score high as it is in the advanced stage in some of the areas mentioned in the document. Before the project takes off, the select cities will be graded based on these criteria and the funding is expected to be according to the grading.

K. Vijayakarthikeyan, Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation, told  The Hindu  here that the process of forming the committee will start as soon as the Corporation receives the communication from the Union Government in this regard.

The focus will be to pick up key areas and develop these in a holistic manner.

Be it sanitation, water management, waste management, housing, or environment initiatives, technology intervention will go up to improve efficiency and to have a sustainable system in place.

The project will also look at recycling and reuse in areas such as waste water treatment and waste management. For instance, building debris will be recycled and made into a new product.

The government is expected to provide financial support for 10 years and this will be mainly for infrastructure development.

The facilities are expected to be operated and maintained to become self-sustainable.
