Coimbatore will soon have a twin city in Europe - Esslingen.
An effort that started nearly six years ago will now be formalised with the signing of an agreement between the two cities and it will benefit both the cities. The twining has been approved by the Central and State Governments.
A six-member delegation will leave for Germany on a six -day visit on Sunday and the twin city agreement will be signed on July 1 in Esslingen.
Meanwhile, a resolution tabled in the Council meeting on Friday said that the three officials would be in Germany between June 28 and July 4 to explore how the two cities could collaborate on areas of mutual interest, health, education, culture and social development. The resolution also said the Corporation would only spend for their travel.
The delegation will include District Collector Archana Patnaik, Mayor P. Rajkumar, Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan, president of Coimbatore Esslingen Association G.D. Gopal, chairman of Siruthuli S.V. Balasubramaniam, and president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, D. Nandakumar. They will visit a water supply plant, waste incineration plant, the Mercedes Benz museum, and the Georgii gymnasium. A presentation on Esslingen Climate Protection goals will be made. The Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner will give details of the goals of the Smart Cities project here.
The agreement will be signed by the Mayors of Coimbatore and Esslingen. The twining of the two cities will help Coimbatore, especially since it is selected under the Smart Cities project, said Mr. Nandakumar.
According to Chamber, with the Central Government approving the signing of the partnership agreement between the two cities, JurgenZieger, Mayor of Esslingen Am Neckar, Germany, extended an invitation to the Members of Esslingen Coimbatore Association.
Accepting the invitation, a delegation comprising of Members of Esslingen Coimbatore Association is visiting Germany. The inking of agreement between two cities had moved forward after the Central Government approved of the move sometime ago.
