The Coimbatore Corporation has decided to appoint on contract a retired staff each from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board and the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation to oversee water supply and street light maintenance operations.

The civic body made the decision at the Council meeting on Monday. Official sources say that the move is aimed at overcoming the human resource shortage, at least till the government accords approval to the proposal to recruit people.

Officers

Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy said that the civic body was looking for officers in the rank of assistant executive engineers or executive engineers. The retired officer from TANGEDCO would be in-charge of overseeing street light maintenance.

He would collect reports from field-level officers, co-ordinate with the contractor for repairing faulty street light and also monitor energy saving measures. In short, he would serve as the nodal officer for all street light-related operations.

The moves come against the backdrop of Corporation appointing 60 persons on part-time basis to repair street lights at the earliest.

Likewise, the retired official from TWAD Board would be responsible for streamlining water supply.
