Officials from the Town Planning Section of the Coimbatore Corporation on Wednesday removed unauthorised hoardings from across the city.

According to officials, following orders from Commissioner G. Latha, the officials from the five zones began the ‘hoarding removal’ operation around 10 a.m. by focussing on unauthorised hoardings on the arterial roads.

The officials said that the zonal teams removed six hoardings on Avinashi Road (Eastern Zone stretch), nine on Mettupalayam Road, 33 on Sathyamangalam Road, 23 on the stretch of the Avinashi Road that came under the North Zone of the Corporation, two on Chetty Street, three on Palakkad Main Road and eight at Athupalam.

The officials took the help of the Coimbatore City Police in removing the hoardings. At places where the hoardings were atop buildings, the officials also damaged the frame in such a way that hoardings could not be placed again.

They said that the Corporation would also initiate criminal action against the owners of the buildings who erected the unauthorised hoardings. In their estimate there could be close to 500 unauthorised hoardings in the city.

In the next few days, the officials would remove hoardings on small roads and buildings there. The objective was to make the city illegal hoarding-free.
