The Coimbatore Corporation on Wednesday kick-started an awareness campaign against use of plastics across the city by engaging a street theatre group.
The inauguration of the campaign was held on the VOC Park grounds with the group staging a performance.
According to the Corporation officials, the civic body had engaged the group for the purpose of creating awareness on the need for reducing the use of plastics, segregating the waste and protecting the environment. The group, Arasu Kalaikuzhu, would stage street plays at 100 locations, 20 each a zone.
The group would perform for two hours a day and there would one play a day. The civic body would decide on the location in consultation with the councillors concerned.
In the performance that included ‘karagattam’, the theatre artistes conveyed messages on how to segregate waste, ill effects of using certain types of plastic items, the impact of fast food culture, the effects of dumping waste in drains, how to segregate waste and recycling of plastics.
