Using the time gained by the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, the Coimbatore Corporation is doing all the homework that is necessary to implement projects announced in this year’s budget in a time-bound manner.

According to sources, a few days ago the senior officials called for a meeting of all the engineering, health and other department staff to list all the projects that were underway with their current status. The officials also asked them to prepare a list of budgetary announcements.

Once that was done, the officials convened a meeting, where the officials where asked to prepare a timetable for the implementation of the project — right from the detailed project report preparation stage to the date of starting the project.

Sources in the civic body said that aside from preparing a timetable, the senior officials had also assigned engineers and doctors with specific responsibilities — ensuring the progress in projects coming under their departments.

This was to relieve the senior officials from the responsibility of making progress in a good number of projects and giving them only supervisory roles. The reallocation of responsibilities would mean that instead of two or three engineers, now more engineers would be in charge of projects. And, likewise doctors in the public health department.

Under this new system, the Corporation proposed to issue work order for the 24x7 drinking water supply project by December 25 this year, obtain the necessary administrative and technical sanctions for the Pilloor III drinking water supply project by the end of this year, complete the e-governance project within a year, rejuvenate the Big Tank by February 2015 and other seven tanks before this year.

The sources said that the timetable was also applicable for the biogas methanation project, storm water drain for added areas project, green corridor, bicycle tracks and other non-motorised initiatives.

As per the timetable, the Corporation proposed to obtain technical sanction and administrative action in September this year and complete a cricket stadium within two years. And, it had proposed a site for the stadium as well. The sources said that the location would be revealed after finalisation.
