Airport Authority of India organised a mass cleanliness awareness campaign around the Coimbatore International Airport on Sunday. The programme was part of the Clean India campaign and also aimed at brining down bird hits which, in the recent years, had affected the airport, airline operators and passengers.

According to data available, 48 bird hits were reported in and around the airport in the last three calendar years. This included 14 in 2012, 13 in 2013 and the record high 21 bird hits in 2014. According to AAI officials, the drastic increase in incidents of bird hit was due to development of areas around the airport.
