Civil engineers should adopt best construction practices to ensure quality, Joint Managing Director of URC Group of Companies C. Devarajan said here on Sunday.

Speaking at the annual convention of the Coimbatore Civil Engineers' Association, he said best practices should be followed for infrastructure projects to be of good quality. With labour problem, the engineers were apprehensive of insisting on best practices.

“There is no dearth for technology or equipment. We should adopt these,” he said. Training was important in the construction sector as retaining people was a challenge.

Civil engineers should inspire youngsters to come into the field. There was a demand for infrastructure and construction works in the country. About Rs. 5 lakh crore was spent a year on infrastructure in the country and it was nearly Rs. 75,000 crore in Tamil Nadu.

Civil engineers should fix standards and take a decision on specifications in the construction works they took up.

Mr. Devarajan said civil engineers should focus on self development, family, community and society to be successful. They should be able to address professional challenges too. Through associations, civil engineers should work together for the betterment of the sector. “We need balance of mind, business values and ethics,” he said.

He also suggested that the civil engineers here create a structure, which would showcase their skills, for the World Classical Tamil Conference to be held in June.
