Around 100 conservancy workers engaged on contract by the civic body staged a protest on Wednesday complaining that the contractor, their employer, who the Corporation had engaged had not paid their wages for May.
After waiting for their employer to pay the wages by the third, fifth and seventh of this month, they were left with no choice but to take to the streets, said worker S. Murugesan. The workers, who did not enjoy quarters like those who were on the Corporation’s rolls, had to pay house rent, children’s school fee and take care of household expenses.
It was not an one-off instance as the delay in wage disbursement took place for the last couple of months. They wanted the Corporation to instruct their employers to pay the wages at the earliest.
Of the more than 400 workers, the Corporation engaged 2,000 to 2,200 workers on contract.
Corporation officials said they had instructed the contractors to pay the wages and they had agreed to disburse those at once.
