The Coimbatore Corporation’s last water supply a few days ago to Rose Garden First and Second Streets was one of disaster. The water smelt of sewage and was black, complained N.I. Jalaludeen, a resident.
It was only the latest in the series of such supplies by the Corporation.
In the past couple of months, the Corporation drinking water supply had been bad. The residents would complain to the authorities, the Corporation would act upon the complaints, the water supply would improve but would return to the poor state after some time.
The cycle had repeated itself on more than two occasions, according to the residents.
When the residents complained about contaminated water supply, the Corporation’s plumbers would stop the supply. This left the residents without water until the next supply. On Friday last, the situation repeated itself, he said.
The Corporation supplied Siruvani water only once a week to the locality that comes under Ward 86.
Till the supply resumed the residents were left without water because it was impossible to use for 14 days the supply that was meant for seven days, and that too in summer. The quality of water also deteriorated.
He complained that the Corporation found it difficult to identify the leak where the sewage mixed with water because the problem recurred.
Stopping water supply was not the solution because the residents suffered.
The Corporation should thoroughly check the water pipelines in the area.
Sources in the civic body said that engineers in charge of Ward 86 had been asked to attend to the problem at the earliest so that in the next water supply the residents got quality water.
