The City police arrested five persons involved in three major crimes and recovered stolen property estimated to be worth Rs. 27 lakh from them.
City Police Commissioner Amaresh Pujari along with Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Hema Karunakaran inspected the recovered property and briefed newspersons.
In the first incident, the police recovered a new lorry, worth Rs. 17.50 lakh, belonging to K.P. Mani (42) of Bharathi Nagar. Mani had parked his lorry at Kaveri Nagar, Kuniamuthur on July 12. Next morning, he found the lorry missing. A case was registered with the Kuniamuthur police station.
On information that the stolen lorry was taken to Chitoor District in Andhra Pradesh, the police here informed their counterparts in Chitoor who traced the lorry in Kudibala police station limit in Andhra Pradesh. None was arrested.
In the second case, the police recovered a car worth Rs.7 lakh which was stolen from a service centre. R. Vijayakumar (50) of Sri Nagar in Peelamedu had parked his car at the service centre in Pappanaickenpalayam.
The Race Course police registered a case. Investigation revealed that M. Deva Prasad (40) of R.S. Puram had walked into the service centre and found the car with the key. He drove away in the car. The police arrested Prasad and recovered the vehicle.
In another incident, the police recovered property worth Rs.2.5 lakh and arrested four persons. Utham Chand of Sukrawarpet said the properties were stolen from his house on July 12. Investigation by the Variety Hall Road police revealed that Sarvan Prajabhat (22) of Rajasthan who was working at Chand's shop along with another worker Sarvan Chand and four others had committed the theft.
The police arrested Narendra Singh (22), Babu Singh (28), Suresh Das (19) and Saravan Singh, all hailing from Rajasthan. The police seized three-and-a-half kg silver, one kg gold covering ornaments, a cell phone, a watch and Rs. 3,000.
Mr. Pujari said stolen property worth Rs. 50 lakh was recovered in the last two months and the same would be returned to the owners this week. He added that the detection rate was at more than 70 per cent in the last seven months.
