For the second consecutive day, heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder lashed the city and suburbs thereby substantially improving the storage in many of the reservoirs.
The rain on Friday night resulted in uprooting of trees and disruption of power supply in many areas. In some areas, the power supply was restored only by 12 noon. The rain also inundated low-level residential areas. People could be seen wading through knee-deep water pushing their vehicles. Traffic was paralysed for nearly two hours.
Though the rain brought so much of inconvenience, it brought cheer as it came after several fortnights.
The 12 rain gauge stations in the district recorded a total rainfall (in mm) of 592.60 and the average rainfall stood at 49.38.
Coimbatore South recorded the highest rainfall (in mm) of 92, followed by Sulur with 90. Rainfall recorded at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday (in mm) as follows: Annur 25, Airport 15.60, Mettuppalayam 6, Pollachi 50, Periyanaickenpalayam 49, Sulur 90, TNAU 27, Cincona 67, Chinnakallar 63, Valparai PAP 53, Valparai Taluk 55.
In the Parambikulam Aliyar Project dam catchment areas rainfall recorded in mm at 8.30 am on Saturday was Sholayar 23, Parambikulam 95, Aliyar 41.2, Thirumurthy dam 44 mm, Amaravathy 31, Upper Nirar 63, Lower Nirar 42, Sircaparthy 32, Vettaikaranpudur 33.4, Manacadavu 88.6, Thoonakadavu 37, Peruvaripallam 40, Upper Aliyar 25, Navamalai 28, Pollachi taluk 100.6, Nallaru 28 and Negamam 50. The water level in two reservoirs - Siruvani and Pilloor- brought cheer as the storage in the dams started improving drastically. Siruvani as against the Full Reservoir level of 50 feet had water up to 33.78 feet and Pillor with an Full Reservoir Level of 100 fet had 89 feet. Siruvani recorded 56 mm rainfall. The rain continued on Saturday also even as the civic body and government agencies remained on high alert to handle any contingency.
