Several political parties staged protests across the city on Friday against India’s participation in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka.
The protestors also demanded the prosecution of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa for alleged war crimes.
Around 100 cadres of the Akila India Samathuva Makkal Katchi staged a protest near the Red Cross Office.
As many as 16 cadres of the Tamil Eezha Atharavu Ilaigner Kootamaippu were arrested after they attempted to burn Congress president Sonia Gandhi in effigy at the same location.
Police personnel, who were posted in large number in the area, seized the effigy and arrested them.
Around 10 cadres of the Aathi Thamilar Peravai were removed from the railway station at Madukkarai after they attempted to enter the station.
In Tirupur , as many as 22 members of Aathi Thamilar Peravai were arrested when they attempted road blockade agitation here on Friday.
“The boycott of the proceedings is essential to register our protest against the killing of hundreds of Tamils in the island nation by the Sri Lankan Army,” A. Tamilvendan, headquarters secretary of Peravai, told reporters.
A large number of police personnel who were stationed near the railway station blocked the protestors at the entrance.
A total of 43 persons belonging to Manithaneya Makkal Katchi laid siege to the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited office at Palladam.
They were also arrested and removed.
