The construction of Vadavalli bus terminus, which is coming up on the Coimbatore Corporation land north of where the buses are parked now, could be delayed. Sources privy to the developments say a change in plan is what is causing the delay.
The proposal when the project got kicked off in January this year was to have the public convenience facility within the terminus compound. It is planned now to take it outside the terminus, north of the construction area to a Revenue Department land.
Acknowledging the recent developments, Coimbatore Corporation officials say the original plan was to have the toilet complex within the bus terminus - opposite the farmers’ market. The proposal now under consideration is to shift it outside the terminus on the Revenue Department land.
This is to accommodate more buses in the terminus.
The Corporation is constructing the terminus on a 48-cent land at ₹ 2.25 crore to accommodate eight to 10 buses. As part of the project, it planned to build four toilets.
But the sources say the move is aimed at factoring in the interests of a few commercial establishments that felt that business could be affected if the toilet complex is close by. The owners of the establishments approached the powers that be and that has led to the revision in plan.
The Vadavalli bus terminus has been a long-pending demand of the residents of the area, who felt the space on Marudhamalai Road was insufficient to accommodate the growing number of buses.
The bus terminus will see buses entering from Marudhamalai Road and exiting through Edayarpalayam Road.
