City Police on Saturday resolved four cases of robbery (chain snatching) by arresting two persons and recovering 16 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
Following incidents of chain snatching, City Police Commissioner T.P. Sundaramoorthy constituted special teams led by Assistant Commissioner of Police L. Balaji Saravanan.
The teams comprising Inspector Elango, Sub-Inspector Duraisingham and police personnel Thangavelu nabbed two persons identified as R. Kumaravelu (26) of Sevur, near Annur, and G. Ilayaraja (27) of Ganapathy. Investigations revealed that the two used motorcycle targeting women walking alone in far flung remote residential areas and relieve them of their gold jewellery.
20 PDK activists held
Coimbatore City police on Saturday removed 20 members of Periyar Dravida Kazhagam who staged a protest in front of an Ayurvedic hospital. According to the police, the PDK members shouted slogans against the hospital for hosting Sri Lankan delegates. On Friday, MDMK members had staged at the hospital's branch in Navakkarai for the same reason. Following the protest, the hospital had shifted the visitors to Kerala.
Assaulted
Bomman, a local AIADMK functionary from Aathu Kinathupatty, near Pollachi, was assaulted with iron rods allegedly by Kannappan, a Kongu Ilaignar Peravai member, on Thursday night.
The Gudimangalam police said enmity between the two was the reason for the assault.
Bomman, who sustained serious injuries, is under treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.
Commits suicide
Mahalingam, a driver from K.G. Chavady, committed suicide at his residence on Thursday following illness. According to the K.G. Chavady police, he fell sick a few days ago and began losing sight. That was the reason for his resorting to the extreme step.
Driver held
The city police have arrested Anandababu, a driver, on the charge of cheating his employer Vishnu Narayanan of Saibaba Colony of Rs. 7.60 lakh.
The police said that Mr. Narayanan had given a cheque for Rs. 7 lakh and Rs. 60,000 in cash to Anandababu to deposit the same in his account. This was about 10 days ago. As Anandababu did not return for long and as he did not answer calls, Mr. Narayanan grew suspicious and checked with his bank.
There he learnt that the money had not been deposited in his account. He then lodged a complaint with the police, who tracked Anandababu's mobile phone and arrested him near Kuniamuthur. The police recovered Rs. 6.70 lakh from him. The police said Anandababu had spent a few thousands and was on his way to Mumbai. He had been a driver with Mr. Narayanan for over two years.
Three arrested
The Saravanampatty police have arrested Manoj Venkatesh (24), Sasikumar (22), and Selvakumar (23) on the charge of assaulting Rajesh (22), a college student, a few days ago. The incident happened when Rajesh had gone to a shop, where the three were there in an inebriated condition.
