Textiles Committee, an organisation of the Union Ministry of Textiles, proposes to set up a Centre of Excellence for sportswear (technical textiles).

Balamurugan told presspersons here on Friday that it would submit a proposal to the Ministry in this regard, appealing that it should be declared as a centre of excellence for sportswear. The centre could be established at Mumbai where the committee already had several facilities.
The Textiles Committee was focusing on quality assurance, export promotion and testing. It invested about Rs. 20 crore during the last two years to upgrade its laboratories.
“We want to focus on the growth of the textile sector and act as a facilitator,” he said.
The committee was implementing several programmes of the Union Government such as the handloom mark and was tying up with international agencies. It proposed to reach out to buying and export houses directly, showcase its facilities and convince them of its laboratory and manpower resources. The objective was to extend its services to more exporters.
The committee accorded star rating to 170 ginning and processing companies last year and this year, 108 units had approached so far. These were mainly from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The star rating helped the units bring down costs.
The committee had 30 offices and 430 officials who were technical experts. Hence, it proposed to launch skill development programme for laboratory technicians in the textile industry. It had submitted a proposal to the government for this.
Mr. Balamurugan also participated in the inaugural of a three-day training programme here on Friday for its officials on “multi-management systems”.
