University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the establishment of Centre for Women's Studies (CWS) at Periyar University here under the 9th Plan Scheme.

Vice-Chancellor K. Muthuchelian said that from the sanctioned fund of Rs.25 lakh, the UGC had forwarded Rs.5 lakh as a part of the grant amount for 2011-2012.

He said that Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri are the four districts, which come under the jurisdiction of the Periyar University and the students hailing from these districts are invariably first generation learners.

He also said that an exclusive CWS would play a key role in uncovering the discrimination against women.
