Celebrations across Coimbatore on I-Day

Voluntary organisations, Government departments, institutions and resident welfare associations organised Independence Day celebrations across the city on Monday.

At Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Vice-Chancellor K. Ramasamy hoisted the national flag.

In his speech, he recalled the sacrifices of several freedom fighters and stressed on the importance of unity. He highlighted the State getting Krishi Karman award from the Central Government for improving millet and pulse production. At Bharathiar University, Vice-Chancellor A. Ganapathi hoisted the national flag and accepted the guard of honour from students.

At TANGEDCO office here, T. Haldorai, Chief Engineer – Distribution for Coimbatore region, hoisted the national flag.

Mettupalayam Road Protection Committee planted 1,500 saplings on either side of Mettupalayam Road. About 900 saplings had grown into trees. On Monday, about 150 volunteers, including students and residents, took part in an initiative to maintain these saplings. The volunteers trimmed branches, removed the tree guards, and cleared the area around the trees for nearly an hour. They were able to do so for 200 trees and plan to continue this effort during weekends.

A group of walkers across age groups at Race Course planted 100 saplings around the 3-km. walking track. At Selvapuram, Friends Minidor and Call Taxi Drivers Union celebrated the day by conducting competitions for children of the locality. They also gave away prizes to students of the Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School at Selvapuram who had faired well in the boards exams this year.

Independence Day was also celebrated at the Theppakadu elephant camp of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR). MTR deputy director V.A. Saravanan hoisted the national flag where the elephants in the camp were lined up and decorated with the tri-colour flag.
