CBCID to probe encounter killing

November 28, 2010 01:30 am | Updated 01:30 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Crime Branch CID will investigate the circumstances that led to the killing of Mohan alias Mohanraj alias Mohanakrishnan (27) in a police encounter near Coimbatore on November 9.

Mohanraj, a former school van driver, was the prime suspect in the kidnap and murder of two children in Coimbatore recently. He was shot dead by the police in an encounter on the Podanur-Vellalore Road after he allegedly snatched a rifle from escort police and tried to escape.

“We have transferred the case to the CBCID as per the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines which call for investigation by an independent agency in such cases,” Director General of Police Letika Saran told The Hindu on Saturday.

However, the Coimbatore police would continue to handle the kidnap and murder of the children. “Investigation in the kidnap case is almost over…police have arrested the accused and the vehicle and other materials involved in the crime were seized…they are winding up investigation,” she said.
