The police have charged Indu Makkal Katchi president Arjun Sampath with making illegal election-related payments.

According to the police, he had undertaken a campaign in support of E.R. Easwaran, the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK) candidate for Pollachi Lok Sabha constituency, without getting permission from either the candidate or from the police officials. He had held an election meeting, put up flex banners, and erected party flags.

The police have registered a case under sections 171 (h)(illegal payments in connection with an election), 188 (disobedience to order promulgated by a public servant), and 341 (wrongful restraint) of Indian Penal Code, and the Tamil Nadu Open Places Prevention of Disfigurement Act 1959.

Code violation

Cases have been registered on Sunday against many activists of political parties for violating the model code of conduct.

The cases pertain to putting up of flex boards, erecting party flags, bursting crackers, and using more number of vehicles than permitted for campaign.

Several Congress, and AIADMK cadre have been charged for unlawful assembly, and obstructing the traffic on Avinashi Road.

Several DMK activists have been booked for distributing handbills containing objectionable content.
