Carry out repairs to roads, say residents

January 21, 2011 12:18 am | Updated 12:18 am IST - ERODE:

A majority of inner roads in Gobichettipalayam Municipality in Erode district have become unmotorable due to lack of proper maintenance.

Motorists travelling on the inner roads such as Car Street have to carefully navigate through huge craters and potholes.

Pipelines

Trenches dug for laying drinking water distribution pipelines have not been closed properly. Besides, the road cuttings made by the telecommunication companies also pose danger to the vehicle users.

Complaints on the poor condition of the inner roads pour into the municipality's office every day. But the municipal administration is yet to initiate any concrete efforts to carry out repairs to the inner roads.

“If the municipality cannot re-lay the road, it can at least take up patch works. No efforts in this regard have been made for the past several months,” a senior citizen alleged.

In a few inner roads, the tarmac has got completely eroded and loose gravel is strewn all over the roads. Riding on the loose gravel is a bone crunching experience, many vehicle users point out.

Residents have submitted petitions to the officials and elected representatives at all levels in the municipality, requesting them to take steps to carry out repairs to inner roads in the town.

“We have also met them on several occasions in this regard. But our pleas have fell on deaf ears,” residents claim.

People wanted the municipal officials to take a closer look on the condition of many inner roads in the town and initiate immediate efforts to carry out road repairs.
