Candidate dies in road accident

Congress candidate for the president's post of Karumathampatti Town Panchayat, Subramaniyam (70) died at a private hospital, after his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a lorry on Ramachipalayam Road, on Thursday.

Karumathampatti police said that the incident took place near Somanur.

The rear side of the victim's vehicle was damaged in the accident. In the impact, he was thrown off the vehicle. He was taken to a private hospital for treatment, where he died.

The Karumathampatti police have registered a case.

Sources said that the candidate's death could lead to the postponement of election to the panchayat.

Complaint lodged

A 38-year-old woman alleged that she was assaulted and criminally intimidated by her husband and family, demanding dowry.

In a complaint lodged with the All Women Police Station (East), K. Jothimani of Nanda Nagar said that she was married for 20 years to V. Ayyavu (42) of Tirupur.

She alleged that Ayyavu's brother and mother harassed her regularly. Jothimani said that Ayyavu in inebriated condition demanded Rs. 50,000 and two sovereign gold jewellery as dowry.

She also alleged that Ayyavu recently married a woman without her knowledge. The police have registered a case.

Arrested

The Race Course police on Wednesday arrested six persons for assaulting an employee of a TASMAC shop and damaging property worth Rs. 6,000. In a complaint, K. Palani (23), a worker at TASMAC outlet in Geetha Hall Road, said that eight persons had quarrelled with him and assaulted him.

The police arrested N. Murugesan (23), S. Jayachandran (23), L. Loganathan (36), C. Selvakumar (36), K. Balu (32) and K. Babu (33), all residing near Trichy Road.

The police have registered a case under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 427 (mischief causing damage to property) and 506 (ii) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and are on the lookout for Suresh and Pradeep.

Fake passport

Immigration officials at the Coimbatore Airport detained a passenger who was about to board a flight to Abu Dhabi on a fake passport on Thursday.

Shaju (30) of Kerala was found with a passport with a false address and name.
