Members of the Kovai Makkal Vizhipunarvu, Manitha Urimai Matrum Samooga Neethi Pathugapu Sangam have urged the district administration to shift out a liquor outlet at the Saradha Mill Road - Panchayat Office Road junction, Podanur.

In their petition submitted at the weekly grievances redress day meeting on Monday, they said the traffic on the road had increased manifold due to the road over bridge construction work at the railway level crossing in the vicinity. The road users take the Saradha Mill Road and then the Panchayat Office Road to reach the other side. With the district administration closing down a number of liquor outlets, the crowd at the aforementioned outlet had increased leading to heavy traffic congestion.

The women find it difficult to use the stretch frequented by tipplers. And, there were five hospitals, two schools in the vicinity. Keeping in mind the public inconvenience, the district administration should shift out the shop, they demanded.

‘Give up opening liquor outlet’

Indu Makkal Katchi (Tamil Nadu) has urged the district administration to stop opening a liquor outlet near Palani Andavar Kovil Street in Ward 41. In its petition submitted at the weekly grievance meeting on Monday, the party said that the administration should not open the liquor outlet as it was only last year the administration had ordered closure of a shop at the very place. And, that came after protests by the area residents. The place chosen to open the shop was close to houses and also industries and is it near to the Palani Andavar Temple. The path leading to the shop is narrow and could lead to accidents.

The residents feared that the shop would lead to law and order problems in the area. Therefore, in the residents’ interest the administration should stop opening the shop in the area.
