Anna Autorickshaw Workers Association affiliated to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Tuesday submitted a petition to District Collector M. Karunagaran to implement the meter fare system in Coimbatore.
The auto workers were led by their district secretary G. Ansar Basha.
Mr.Ansar Basha recalled the meeting conducted by the District Collector on September 24 regarding implementation of meter fare system in Coimbatore following Chennai. The administration had sought the views of the various trade unions and it was decided that the demands, suggestions and views expressed by the NGOs, autorickshaw workers and recommendations of the district administration would be forwarded to the Government for a decision.
At the meeting, a section of the autorickshaw workers especially those belonging to the CITU demanded Rs.30 as minimum fare as against the Government fixed fare of Rs.25 (for 1.8 km) and sought Rs. 40 as minimum for hill stations such as Valparai. Mr.Basha pointed out that the autorickshaw workers affiliated to the ATP of the AIADMK were willing to ply by the meter charge fixed by the Government.
He exhorted the Collector to take up the matter with the State Government and get the same implemented in Coimbatore at the earliest.
