The Citizens Committee which has been crusading for the revival of the Erode-Palani new railway line project via Dharapuram and Kangayam in Tirupur district, made a representation to Prime Minister Modi citing the need for expeditious execution of the project.
Lingam Chinnasamy, general secretary of the Committee, told The Hindu that though the first instalment of allocation was made in 2005 Railway budget for the said 91.5 km rail line project, the project did not progress further after 2011.
“Even the allocations to meet the expenditure was made in a piecemeal manner with just Rs. 85 crore sanctioned since 2005 against the total project cost of Rs. 400 crore,” he pointed out.
The forum stated that the new line, when commissioned, would set up a tourism circuit connecting historic temples in Palani, Chennimalai areas.
Besides that, industrial clusters in Kangayam, Dharapuram and Vellakoil in the route would stand benefitted because of the new line.
