Activists of the Environment Conservation Group, led by the president of the group R. Mohammed Saleem, following an anonymous call visited a premise in Kattoor and found rearing of rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula Krameri).

They informed the Coimbatore Forest Department resulting in the team reaching the spot and along with nature lovers, the caged parakeets were rescued.
The parakeets were brought to the forest office. Two healthy birds were set free and the parakeets which were unable to fly were being rehabilitated and will be set free as soon as they are fit to fly.
In spite of repeated caution and reports about people being fined for rearing, selling and keeping parakeets as pet birds, people still have wild Indian birds as pets which are illegal and could lead even to imprisonment.
Illegal
It is illegal to buy or sell Indian wild birds. The common Indian birds that are kept as pets are Parakeets, Munias and Mynas besides other endangered Indian species.
Such acts are illegal and punishable under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
