The Tamil Nadu State government was in the process of establishing cadaver transplant centres in Coimbatore and Madurai, said J. Amalorpavanathan, State Co-ordinator, Cadaver Transplant Programme, on Saturday.
The reason behind establishing the centres was to provide these facilities outside Chennai so that persons in need of organs were spared of the trouble of travelling to the State capital, he said and added that the Government would soon open the centres. But, there was shortage in the number of doctors with expertise in cadaver transplant. Likewise, for Coimbatore, the Government was also in the process of granting a kidney transplant centre.
He added that since October 2008, when the cadaver transplant programme began, organs from 450 persons had been harvested to help 2,488 persons.
