Business analytics is the buzzword that is making its rounds in the academic circles these days.
Placement officers from a number of engineering colleges say that in the recruitment process that is underway, a large number of business analytics companies are looking for recruiting candidates as the demand is high.
Business analytics involves mining data available on the Internet and in private (in companies) to look for pattern/information that will help companies devise strategies, come up with new products or watch their rival’s progress.
A placement officer says that the salary offered by these companies has also increased and is better than those offered by the Information Technology (IT) companies. The higher package, according to him, is to attract a better pool of talents.
The package also reflects the growth, these companies envisage in the future. The highest package this year is around Rs. 12 lakh per annum.
Another placement officer says that these business analytics companies are urging students to look at the job offer from a three or four year’s perspective, when the demand will be far higher than IT companies, he added. His college is also seeing a good number of business analytics companies this year offering job opportunities to students.
Seeing the potential in business analytics, the RVS Institute of Management Studies and Research has launched a Masters in Business Administration programme with focus on business analytics. This programme is in partnership with the software giant IBM.
The Institute’s director R. Rajkumar says that the decision to introduce the course this academic year is the result of the boom in the business analytics industry. The company, IBM, has given the resource materials, trained faculty and will offer a certification to those who complete the course successfully.
A head of a business analytics company, who recruited students from a college in Coimbatore, says that for the first time, he has recruited students to be a part of his company’s product development team.
Academics say that in the next few years, colleges will start offering a paper or two in business analytics as part of the curriculum. The colleges, on their part, are already conducting guest lectures on the topic and entering into partnerships with companies in this field.
