March 31, 2010 09:08 pm | Updated 09:08 pm IST - Udhagamandalam:

The Coonoor Consumer Protection Association (CCPA) has condemned the increase in mini bus fares which came into effect on Monday.

In a memorandum submitted to the Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik, the Secretary of the association P.K.Sabapathi pointed out that the increase which was done without the authorisation of the government was the third in the last two years.

Minimum fare

Though it had repeatedly been brought to the notice of the district administration and the transport department on behalf of the consumers that the minimum fare was more than what had been fixed by the government it is not known what action has been taken so far.

While on the one hand the government has announced that bus fares will not be increased, on the other mini buses had increased their fares despite opposition from the public.

This was condemnable, it was pointed out.

The administration and the transport department should take steps without delay to roll back the fares.
