A burst in the Pilloor main service pipeline at Karattumedu on the outskirts of the City threw the water supply to majority of the areas out of gear for more than 12 hours on Thursday.
The burst not only affected water supply but also led to flooding of the roadside along the Sathyamangalam Road (National Highway Number 209).
The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) and Corporation authorities on Thursday rectified the burst in the Pilloor pipeline in a massive effort that commenced at dawn and was completed by dusk.
According to sources, the 200 mm diameter air valve joint in the main distribution pipeline gave away near Karattumedu in the small hours of Thursday
Officials suspended the supply and kept the water load in the pipeline in a state of readiness at Vayyampalayam a little further from Karattumedu.
Supply restored
On completion of the works, the supply was restored by releasing the water from Vayyampalayam and by resuming pumping at Pilloor and Velliangadu treatment plants.
Water reached the Corporation’s Main Service Reservoir (MSR) on Sathyamangalam Road at dusk and distribution to the city commenced shortly.
However, the disruption in supply for a day is likely to have a cascading effect on the distribution pattern for a day and the authorities expect the situation to improve by Friday night or by Saturday morning.
