A burst in Pilloor pipeline on Dr.Nanjappa Road near the Avanashi Road flyover in the small hours of Saturday led to waterlogging on Old Post Office Road, Dr.Nanjappa Road, Avanashi Road, the Collectorate and nearby areas for nearly three hours.
According to the Corporation sources, frequent power disruptions on Friday led to air-lock causing damage to the pipeline.
The burst took place around 3 a.m. and the information reached the Corporation after two-and-a-half hours. Later, the officials came to the spot and the water supply to the line was stopped. However, the water in the mainline had to be drained and it left the areas waterlogged.
Works by the Corporation by digging the road to replace the damaged portion of 500-mm dia asbestos concrete pipe with a mild steel pipe that began in the morning threw traffic out of gear on LIC Road and Dr.Nanjappa Road throughout the day on Saturday.
Traffic on flyover heading towards Dr.Nanjappa Road was also diverted on Avanashi Road to take the left turn at the LIC Junction. This led to choking of traffic on LIC Road and VOC Park area.
A team of officials led by Assistant Commissioner of Coimbatore Corporation, South Zone, A. Lakshmanan, Executive Engineer Sugumar and Assistant Engineer C. Sundarraj carried out the restoration works.
They were confident of laying the replacement pipe by late on Saturday night and resuming the water supply by midnight, so that Town Hall, Ukkadam, GM Nagar, Karumbukkadai, Olymbus, Ramanathapuram, Puliakulam, Tiruchi Road and Sowripalayam areas get water by Sunday evening.
The officials said that they were resuming the supply in a phased manner by gradually increasing the quantity.
