Builders, contractors, architects, and property developers in the city have appealed to the district administration to recommend to the Government permission for 50 per cent deviation in buildings that want to get regularised under the building regularisation scheme. In a joint memorandum to District Collector M. Karunagaran recently, they said that the deviation was permitted only for buildings constructed before 2007.

This should be available for all buildings so that all of them can get regularised. The building rules and approval processes should be simplified.


The building rules that were existent now were framed to suit the population of the district several years ago. Many other States had modified the norms to suit the current growth trend. Tamil Nadu should also change the rules related to issues such as floor space index based on the current development of the districts and population growth.

Buildings that had not provided adequate safety provisions should not be permitted to function. The building owners should be given a specific duration to install these provisions and it should be monitored by the officials.

Similarly, those who had not got the approvals should be given a deadline to do so. The officials should insist that basic amenities would not be provided to buildings that do not get the approvals or do not have the safety provisions.

A monitoring system should be evolved, including the officials and experts, to ensure that the buildings went in for modern automatic safety systems. Since the district is developing rapidly, it should have a Coimbatore District Development Authority, on the lines of the one in Chennai. This would expedite the approval process.


The administration should have meetings with the construction and property sector representatives regularly to ensure planned growth, they said.
