BJP to take up Smart City CEO appointment with Centre

Will organise protest, says State vice-president of the party

The Bharatiya Janata Party viewed the selection of R. Suganya, daughter of ex-MLA from AIADMK K.P. Raju, as the chief executive officer of the company that implements Smart City project as a serious violation of the Central Government’s guidelines, said BJP State vice-president Vanathi Srinivasan here on Sunday.

The party would take it up with the Central Government and also organise a protest here.

Though the party had nothing against the person selected, it was concerned about the deviation from the path shown by the Central Government for implementing Smart City project.

The party would meet the Municipal Administration minister, the Chief Minister and also the Union Housing and Urban Development Minister to highlight the violation of rules and seek a change in chief executive officer. In the appointment of the CEO, merit alone should have mattered and nothing else. If the Corporation did not find the right candidate, as it had claimed, it should have scouted for talent across the country or globe, if necessary. It was to avoid such interferences that the Central Government had mandated that urban local bodies form a company to execute the Smart City projects and that too with the requisite professional expertise.

But in this case the Corporation seems to have not adhered to the mandate.

Smart City was a big opportunity for Coimbatore, she added.
