Bharatiya Janata Party functionary Gopalakrishnan (56) was found dead near a railway crossing in Tirupur on Sunday morning.

His son Pradeep has complained to the Tirupur North Police that the death appeared suspicious and that he could have been murdered because of enmity.

The police said that Gopalakrishnan, who is also a member of ‘Bharatha Annaiyar Peravai’, had left home on his two-wheeler on Sunday morning saying that he was going to a relative’s house in Rakkipalayam.

Soon after he left home, Pradeep got a call on his mobile phone. The caller said that his father was found dead near the railway crossing.

When Pradeep rushed to the spot, he found Gopalakrishnan lying dead in a pool of blood with head injuries. Very close to the body lay his two-wheeler.

The Tirupur North Police rushed to the spot, inspected the scene of crime and took away the body for post-mortem examination.

They said that Pradeep had complained stating that since his father had been fighting against land grabbing, people who were upset with his activities could have murdered him. In particular, three municipal councillors could have had a hand.

Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case of suspicious death. Further investigations are on.
