Rescued parakeets being released into the botanical garden in Forest College in Coimbatore on Friday.

As many as 28 birds that were rescued from traders were on Friday released into the Botanical Garden on the Forest College campus by N. Satheesh, District Forest Officer - Coimbatore.

The birds included Rose Ringed Parakeet, Plum Headed Parakeet, Indian Peafowl, Pariah Kite, Brahminy Kite, Bluc Rock Pigeon.

Birds found injured or at an young age were given treatment at the Parakee Transit Aviar of the Forest Department.

Mr. Satheesh said that 128 birds were released in the last seven months.

Though 12 species of Indian Parakeets are protected under schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, most often they were caged and treated as toys in the name of hobby.

Most of those who buy birds from traders were not aware of the law, or concerned about the bird's freedom, he added.

Mr. Satheesh said that according to the Wildlife Protection Act keeping parakeets as pets was an offence. Those who were in possession of such birds should surrender them to Forest Department.

If birds were found confined citizens can contact the District Forest Office at 0422-2456911 or animal rescuers at 96260-11011, he added.
