A group of seven were nabbed by the police reportedly ahead of the gang’s plan to murder two persons in a bid to take revenge.
According to police, Shanmuga Thevar (51) and Pattamuthu (35) of Tuticorin district were murdered on January 25, 2013 as a fallout of previous enmity born out of a clash during the elections to the local bodies.
In this case, Manikandan, Masanamuthu and Ulagamuthu and 12 others were arrested by the police.
Of the 15, two persons who came out on bail were working in a mill at Kondampatti, near Kinathukkadavu.
On getting to know of the same, Azhagukrishnan, son of Shanmuga Thevar, and Ramesh, brother of Pattamuthu, along with five persons came to Pollachi on November 25.
For the last eight days, the gang was on the job of monitoring the movements of the two target victims and were chalking out a plan to kill the two and escape to Tuticorin.
On Tuesday night, police during a vehicle check intercepted a maxicab vehicle and questioned the gang.
After they gave contradicting replies, police who examined the vehicle found lethal weapons inside. Police have registered a case against them under sections 120 B (conspiracy), 116 (abetment of an offence), 118 (concealing the design to commit an offence punishable with imprisonment), 151 (knowingly continuing in an assembly of five or more persons after commended to disperse), and 25 and 26 of Arms Act.
Superintendent of Police – Coimbatore Rural District M. Sudhakar lauded the police team for their swift action and presence of mind that prevented a double murder.
