Former Governor of West Bengal Gopalkrishna Gandhi urged the public (the electorate) to be “vigilant and courageous” and to look for their own political and spiritual intelligence for guidance to safeguard democracy.

He was speaking at the GK Sundaram centenary celebrations organised by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and a committee of hosts here on Wednesday and released the “Centennial Collectanea”.

He said that late GK Sundaram symbolised the whole tapestry of values. In a democracy, the public should have a political option. The Swatantra Party, which GK Sundaram was part of, also had financial decontrol as its objective. Corruption was the main issue and people were vigilant and watchful.

M.V. Subbiah, Managing Trustee of AMM Foundation, said GK Sundaram was a person of great integrity, vision and values. He believed that Corporate houses had a social responsibility. Serving the society was important, especially in areas such as education, healthcare and environment.

Swami Dayananda Saraswati of Arsha Vidya Gurukulam said GK Sundaram was a person of dharma. “He followed dharma in all spheres of life.”

Tamil scholar D. Gnanasundaram said GK Sundaram had participated in the salt satyagraha when he was just 16 years old. He was known for his generosity, kindness and simplicity. S. Pathy, Chairman and Managing Director of Lakshmi Mills and Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Coimbatore Kendra B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar also spoke.
