In the wake of the recent bank robberies and the subsequent killing of five suspected robbers in an encounter in Chennai, banks, non-banking financial institutions and jewellers in the district have been asked to step up security measures in their establishments.
Amitkumar Singh, Superintendent of Police, convened a meeting of the bankers, jewellers and businessmen from across the district to apprise them of the security measures to be taken to prevent theft and burglary in their establishments.
Mr. Singh directed the bankers and traders to install Closed Circuit Television Cameras and burglar alarms in banks and business centres to prevent such crimes.
The Superintendent of Police further said there were 50 branches of nationalised banks, 180 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks and 17 Non Banking Finance Companies operating in different parts of the district.
Mr. Singh said the police would undertake a security survey in all the banks and the business establishments from next week. The survey team would be headed by officials of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police and Inspector of Police. The team will inspect the strong rooms, security services, CCTVs and other security-related services. After the survey, a report would be prepared and sent to the managements of the respective banks and business establishments for further action, he said.
Mr. Singh also appealed to the banks and other business establishments to hire ex-servicemen for security duty. He also announced that Crime Prevention Awareness Week would be observed in the district soon to create awareness among the people.
