The strike by bank employees was total in Coimbatore district with no banking operation in the 600 branches in the district.
Nearly 4,000 employees participated in the strike demanding immediate wage revision settlement and protesting against the ongoing banking sector reforms. About 1,000 employees staged a demonstration here as part of the protest.
ATMsHowever, operation of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) was not affected. Since it is a one-day strike, ATMs were not affected, according to J. Vanangamudi, Coimbatore District President of the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation.
In Tirupur, financial transactions were hit badly in banks across the district. Around 3,000 members of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella forum for nine bank employees unions, took part in the strike.
Led by D. Manoharan, district coordinator of UFBU, the bank employees also staged a demonstration near the Karnataka Bank's branch in the city.
