For the past one-and-a-half months or so the residents of Ganapathy Pudur and Balan Nagar have been suffering bad roads, thanks to the Coimbatore Corporation for carrying out the underground drainage work at snail’s pace.
Residents say the Corporation first dug the road to lay the pipelines and collection chambers. The earth it dug lay piled up on the roads, causing inconvenience to not only two-wheeler riders but also pedestrians. The streets in the area are narrow and they were made narrower by the digging and dumping, says K. Viswanathan, a resident.
The locality that comes under Ward 47 of the Corporation, has narrow roads and houses close to 150 families.
His friend and another resident, S. Narayanasamy says that the Corporation has dumped the dug earth on drains and that has affected flow of sewage. To ensure that the sewage flows, the civic body has opened the lid. And this has resulted in increase in mosquito menace. Now when the earth was getting hardened, the Corporation has again started digging the roads.
This time it says for giving house service connections. But even this work is happening in fits and starts, adds Mr. Viswanathan.
The residents say that they want the Corporation to complete the work at the earliest. Ward Councillor P.V. Subramaniam says that he has raised the issue a number of times in the Corporation Council and also North Zone meeting. He has also staged a sit-in protest a month ago. He says that finally he has managed to convince the authorities to repair the damaged roads.
The officials have prepared the estimates and sent the same for approval. Once that is approved, the locality will have good roads, he promises.
