More than 800 autorickshaw drivers, including those who have recalibrated their meters with fares fixed by the government, took part in the demonstration.

Mr. Sugumaran said they the fare to be fixed at Rs. 30 for the first 1.5 km and Rs. 15 per km from then on.

Secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause K. Kathirmathiyon recalled that the fuel price was more than Rs. 10 per litre compared to the prevailing price when the court directed the present fares to be implemented, about a year ago. Reiterating his stand that the fares need not be reduced based on fuel price, he added that the existing fare should be strictly implemented.
