The Coimbatore District Autorickshaw Workers All Association Joint Committee has urged the district administration to implement the meter system in Coimbatore.

The association members, led by president P.K. Sukumaran, submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunagaran during the public grievances meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday.

Such a move, he said, would benefit both the commuters and autorickshaw drivers. However, Mr. Sukumaran said that the fares fixed for Chennai should not be emulated across the State and the local conditions of each city must be taken into account while fixing the fares.

The association demanded that the fare for the minimum 1.5 km must be Rs. 30 and after that, Rs. 15 for every km. In the night (after 6 p.m.), it must be Rs. 40 for the minimum distance and Rs.20 thereon. The association said that Coimbatore district had a total of 16,000 autorickshaws, of which around 10,000 plied within the Corporation limits.

Residents’ plea

Members of the Thimmapalayam Ram Nagar and T.R.S. Garden Residents Welfare Association have urged the district administration to halt the move to open a liquor outlet in their locality.

A group of residents led by association president T.R. Shanmugasundaram submitted a petition to the Collector during the grievances meeting on Monday.

Petition submitted

A petition seeking action against an army man who had allegedly married four women was submitted to the Collector.

Three women said that the army cook - Joseph alias Philip Joseph – had married all of them after divorcing his first wife.

Besides action against Joseph, they also sought assistance for their children.

The police have registered a case against Joseph and are on the lookout for him.
