January 08, 2011 10:58 pm | Updated 10:58 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

The Association of University Teachers (AUT) will support teaching and non-teaching staff of Bharathiar University in their protest against the State Government's decision to allot land to Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore, on the Bharathiar University campus.

As many as 150 members belonging to various teaching and non-teaching associations under the umbrella of the Bharathiar University Teachers' Association (BHUTA) went on a hunger strike on Saturday in front of the University, urging the Government to withdraw the order.

P. Jayagandhi, president, AUT, said the association had decided to extend its support because “space should not be carved out of one university and given to another.”

According to T. Muthukrishnan, Secretary, BHUTA, and a Syndicate member, representatives from various associations from outside Coimbatore had also joined the protest on Saturday.
