The Coimbatore City Police foiled an attempt made by cadre of the Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) to burn Prime Minister Narendra Modi in effigy here, on Thursday.
The protestors raised slogans condemning the Union Government for allegedly denying visa for a five member committee of the United Nation formed – to visit India – to conduct an inquiry into the killings of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
They urged the Government to sanction visa for the international delegation and ensure a proper inquiry into the mass killings in Sri Lanka – in the yesteryears. A total of five TPDK cadres led by Coimbatore City President V. Gopal gathered before the Red Cross building with the effigy here on Thursday morning and tried to burn in, when the police grabbed it from them. They were booked under section 151 (Arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offence) of the Code of Criminal Procedure and released later that day. The arrested demonstrators were Gopal, the Kazhagam’s Coimbatore East Zone secretary M. Jeeva and cadre K. Somasundaram, Prabakaran and B. Tamilarasan.
