An attempt was made to burgle State Bank of India’s ATM kiosk near Old Bus Stand here on Sunday. Police said that the burglars could not lay their hands on the cash as they failed to break open the particular chamber which contained currencies. The machine was found damaged.

The ATM was situated at the basement of a commercial complex and no security guard was posted. City Police Commissioner N.K. Senthamarai Kannan, after visiting the spot along with Deputy Commissioner of Police P. Sundaravadivel, said that the accused had damaged the surveillance camera kept inside the ATM kiosk.

“However, we will go through the recorded footage inside which normally would be intact till the moment the camera lens were damaged,” the police officials added.

But later the Commissioner said that the cameras were not working. The accused had also sprinkled chilly powder all over the ATM kiosk.

Detained Collector G. Govindaraj has detained R. Jeganathan (27) and A. Raja (31) under Goondas Act. Official sources said the detention was served on the accused following their involvement in robbery cases under Mangalam police station limits.

Arrested The Tirupur North police on Sunday arrested S. Purushothaman (28), a native of Dharapuram, for his alleged involvement in 11 robbery cases in Tirupur, Namakkal, Madurai and Thanjavur.

The accused was caught when he waylaid a 23-year-old youth at knife point near New Bus Stand.
