Parents of differently abled children who had undergone corrective surgeries and received assistive devices should use the opportunity, help the children overcome disability and educate them to the maximum possible extent, Corporation Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy has said.
For, such facilities were a boon, especially for those from lower economic strata, he said while speaking at the function the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Coimbatore, had organised in association with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown to distribute assistive devices to children with special needs who had undergone corrective surgery.
He said parents of children with disabilities from lower economic strata should be happy for being able to get their children operated at private hospitals because of the Chief Minister’s comprehensive health insurance scheme.
Mr. Ponnusamy spoke about the special school for children with hearing impairment the Corporation was running in R.S. Puram.
At the function, members of Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown in the presence of V. Prabhakaran, Chief Education Officer, SSA, V. Shantha, Assistant Project Officer, SSA, D. Suresh Kumar, chairman, Lakshmi Hospitals, Thudiyalur, Suresh Lund, assistant governor, Rotary Club, M. Murugan, district co-ordinator, Community Service, Rotary Club, gave away assistive devices and aid worth Rs. 4 lakh to 70 children.
The Rotary Club and SSA had earlier conducted a measurement camp on April 28 to design the devices. The camp was conducted in the presence of doctors.
J. Subhash, District Co-ordinator, SSA’s Inclusive Education Department, said that SSA had helped 187 differently abled children undergo corrective surgeries.
It selected the children from camps conducted by a team of doctors of various specialities.
