Transport Department on September 14-15 conducted surprise vehicle checks in Coimbatore, Tirupur and the Nilgris districts and fined a number of vehicles. A release from the Deputy Transport Commissioner K.N. Uthayanun says that in the exercise that involved regional transport officers and motor vehicle inspectors, the Department fined owners of 49 vehicles that were registered in other states and omni buses, 285 lorries, a bus, 29 maxi cabs, 15 tourist cars, two auto rickshaws and 85 non-transport vehicles for not paying tax and other offences.
The Department also collected Rs. 3.51 lakh in tax and Rs. 3.02 lakh in spot fine. It would also collect Rs. 33,345 in tax and Rs. 5.49 lakh in fine and it had initiated proceedings for the same. During the exercise the Department also seized four vehicles that were on roads without registration.
